Introduction

Hello. My name is Phinecia. I am a 40 something adult female. I have a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, a Master’s of Education, and a Master’s in Applied Behavior Analysis. I work as a behavior and autism specialist in a school district. Oh and I guess I should mention that I have autism.

For many years I hid the fact that I had autism. I didn’t want sympathy because it’s not something to be sad about. I didn’t want to be treated differently because I’m not that different from you. Then, 5 years ago, I started working in a school district that was inclusive not only with students but with staff. I found a home in my place of work. I developed friendships and realized I could be honest with these people. Slowly I began to tell people that I had autism.

The responses were varied, but most people were in disbelief. The biggest response I got was “I never would have thought.” And this is from professionals who test students for autism almost daily.

Their response is the reason I started this blog. I want people to see that autism is not a disability for everyone. I simply have different abilities from you.

PLEASE NOTE: everything written in this blog is MY opinion and MY experience. Not everyone is going to agree with me and that’s ok. Not everyone is going to experience autism like me and that’s to be expected. If you’ve met one person with autism then you’ve met ONE person with autism. We are all unique, just like neurotypical people are unique so stop acting so shocked about that.
